Stanley Pollyea had no idea where he was being assigned when the army sent him to participate in the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp. He ended up assisting the Medical Corps with setting up hospitals at the camp—two complete hospitals in twenty-four hours. He also helped move prisoners from the camp to the hospitals-- although many prisoners were so frail and sick that they died before they could be transferred. .
Years later Stanley said he had never been able to forget the smell of the crematorium at Buchenwald.
